Accident Procedures
WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE IN AN ACCIDENT:
Call 911 if you or any person involved in an accident is injured, if there is severe damage to any vehicle or if traffic is blocked as a result of the accident.
University Vehicles
If you're driving a vehicle owned by the University, follow established procedures:
- Know how to respond if you are in an accident.
- Claims involving University Vehicles must be filed within 24 hours. Follow procedures to report vehicle accidents or damage and complete an Accident Report.
- Insurance for University vehicles is managed by Purchasing and Risk Services. For insurance questions, contact:

- Police Reports cannot be submitted in place of Accident Reports, but may be included as supporting documentation.
- Fleet Services manages repairs for all University vehicles. Notify us of any accident or incident involving your University vehicle:

Fleet Services Rental Vehicles
If you're driving a rental vehicle owned by Fleet Services:
- Contact us at (949) 824-5535 or email fleet@uci.edu. Provide a detailed message if After-Hours.
- Submit an Accident Report directly to Fleet Services.
- Police Reports cannot be submitted in place of Accident Reports, but may be included as supporting documentation.
- Request alternate transportation, if necessary.
Vendor-Owned Rental Vehicles
If you're driving a rental vehicle owned by an outside vendor (obtained through Fleet Services):
- Contact the vendor directly. Vendors have their own procedures for accidents, including submitting information to their insurance provider.
- Contact information for vendors can be found on your copy of the contract, and on the bright yellow placard provided by Fleet Services.
- Complete the vendor's Accident Report.
- Submit a copy of the completed report to Fleet Services.
- Police Reports cannot be submitted in place of Accident Reports, but may be included as supporting documentation.
- Arrange for alternate transportation, if necessary.
SAFETY NOTE:
Using a phone without a hands-free device & texting while driving is illegal. The University discourages the use of electronic devices while driving.
